The issue of finding talented labor to meet demand in the construction industry is not going away any time soon, leaving many builders in search of a solution. But Demi Knight Clark tells YaleNews that one solution is to give more women the skills and opportunities to excel.
Clark, a 20-year veteran of executive leadership roles at construction and manufacturing firms, started She Built This City, a social venture that has the goal of creating career paths for young women in construction and manufacturing. According to YaleNews, women only comprise 8 percent of the construction workforce, with over half of them in sales and office jobs.
“Companies now are desperately searching for this workforce, and the women are there,” Clark tells YaleNews. We just need to connect the dots and shorten the gap between the wages and [career] stages.”
